Those of you that know me well, or have been coming for treatments for some time, will know that I am deeply passionate about skincare. It was obvious to me that my first ever blog should be facial skincare focused. So, here’s 5 top tips for your skin!
1. Always wear an SPF
What is an SPF? It stands for sun protection factor in sunscreen and it protects your skin from the sun’s radiation. The sun emits both UVA and UVB rays. These rays contribute to signs of aging in the skin, like wrinkles and sagging. It is so important to wear an SPF every day as sun damage is cumulative, you can’t just skip a day and hope for the best because, by then, the damage is done. And don’t think facial SPF is just for when it’s sunny, the sun emits harmful rays even when it’s cloudy. An addition of SPF to your skincare routine needs to be daily, and don’t think because you are a young whippersnapper you won’t need it – skincare in your 20’s is as important as in your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond.
Another reason to wear SPF, aside from premature aging, is skin cancer. 80% of all skin cancers are caused by over exposure to the sun or sunbeds, this means that the majority of skin cancers are preventable. I know that it can be extremely difficult to navigate this world of SPF and knowing the right thing to use can be daunting. My recommendation is that you need a minimum of SPF30, with SPF50 being what I fully recommend. I also suggest that you use one that’s separate to what it says is in your moisturiser or foundation. Why!!?? I hear you cry? Well, although it may say SPF30 on the label, the amount you put on your face simply won’t be enough to contain that level of coverage. (There have been all sorts of studies into this.) The best way to apply is to put on your moisturiser first, then apply an SPF 30 or more each morning. I use Tropic’s Sun Day, which also doubles up as a gorgeous primer – oh and it smells divine.
2. Drink water!
I know how hard it is to achieve those elusive 8 glasses of water a day. Sometimes when I’m so busy in the salon I can go all day without having a drink. But as cliché as it sounds, water really is one of the best things you can do for your skin! It’s going to flush toxins out of your system that can cause skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, this in turn will help you to achieve that glowing complexion we all dream about. Water improves your skins elasticity, and the more supple your skin, the less wrinkles you will see!
3. Double cleanse.
I talk about this a lot! Basically, if you live in a pollution heavy city or you wear make up, double cleansing is so important. The first cleanse you do will remove the make up, and the second cleanse will really get deep into that skin and mean the actives in your skincare will get the chance to work, removing excess sebum that can cause skin blockages and result in blackheads and spots! Yuck!
4. Daily routine!
My mantra – CLEANSE! TONE! MOISTURISE! I have so many customers that tell me that they simply don’t have the time for this daily. That’s where I tell you that you do! There’s always time. Your basic skincare routine doesn’t have to take hours or be complicated. I use Tropic skin products both in salon and at home and the simple ABC routine takes a matter of minutes. I promise.
5. Night cream.
I’m a huge fan of night creams. Sure, there is nothing at all wrong with using your daily moisturiser at night – and please do if you don’t have a night cream! But night creams are formulated differently. They are designed to work with your skin while its asleep to repair and regenerate, they are usually thicker in consistency and contain more active ingredients. I find my skin is much happier in the morning when I use my night cream.
There are many, many more tips I could give you but I thought I’d keep my first ever blog relatively short and sweet! Please let me know what you think – hit subscribe to be notified of future blog posts I release. Will you make any changes to your skin routine based on these tips? Do you have top tips you’d like to share? Let’s keep the dialogue open.
